This vast wildlife sanctuary is the oldest and most popular national park in Tanzania. Serengeti's biggest fame comes from the annual wildebeest migration, an event regarded as one of the wonders of the modern world. This migration involves about one million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, all trekking northwards enmasse into Kenya's Masai Mara national reserve. The animals migrate in search of pasture and water.
Many accounts of the wildebeest migration depict it as a simple return journey between two destinations. In reality, the wildebeest are in an almost constant migration throughout their lives in an anti-clockwise circuit. They only rest briefly for the calfing season, during which they produce more than 8,000 calves daily. The calfing takes place in the region of the Serengeti.
Beyond the migration, Serengeti national park offers one of the best safari experiences in Africa. Some of the animals you'll find here include large herds of buffalo, some elephants, giraffes, gazelles, impala, and many other antelope species. Naturally, plenty of predators reside here to prey on these herbivores. You will see lions, cheetahs, hyenas, jackals, and many other smaller predators. There are some leopards too, though they are quite elusive and hard to spot.
Some of the activities you can undertake at Serengeti include walking safaris, hot air balloon safaris, guided bush piknicks, and game drives among others.
