The Ngorongoro Crater is a huge caldera supposedly formed about 2 million years ago, when a massive volcanic mountain collapsed. This marvelous natural feature is located in the larger Ngorongoro conservation area, which itself is part of the same ecosystem as the Serengeti and the Mara.
The walls of the crater stand as tall as 2,286 m altitude, from which it falls steadily by over 600 meters to the floor. With a diameter of about 19km, the floor covers a surface area of over 260 square kilometers. Tens of thousands of animals reside in this natural enclave, making the Ngorongoro a unique safari experience, with one of the highest animal density in the continent.
All the big five animals - lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo, and leopard -are found here, as well as plenty of antelope species and other herbivores.Hippos, waterbucks, girrafes, serval cats, and even the extinction-threatened African wild dogs are present here.
Ngorongoro is also great for birdwatching safaris. More than 500 bird species have been recorded here. These include flamingos, pelicans, many other waterbirds, eagles, vultures, the kori bustard, and many others.
