Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa. It is found in Northern Tanzania, at the country's border with Kenya. Surprisingly, despite being the tallest in Africa, it is considered an easy climb. This is because anyone of average fitness levels can make it to Uhuru peak, the tallest point on the mountain, without having to use any specialized equipment.
Kilimanjaro consists of three main volcanic cones - Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Kibo is the tallest of the three, and is the destination for all mountain climbing expeditions in Kilimanjaro. Mawenzi is very jagged and rugged, and an extremely technical climb. For now, the peak remains closed for climbers because of the danger of rock falls.
There are six main trekking routes for climbing Mt Kilimanjaro. These are Lemosho, Machame, Marangu, Rongai, Shira, and Umbwe. The Machame route is the most popular among trekkers, but is also the most crowded. It is a fairly difficult route compared to the easier, and almost equally popular Marangu route.
