Even though Tanzania is blessed with so many national parks and reserves, each endowed with an incredible number of wild animals, the country was for many years overshadowed by Kenya as the preferred safari destination in East Africa. This was partly because of inadequate marketing by the country's tourism authorities, and partly because of a somewhat underdeveloped tourism infrastructure.
In the past few years however, the country has undergone an amazing transformation to become just as popular as, arguably even more popular than, her northern neighbour Kenya.
Most of the famous Tanzania safari destinations are found in the so-called northern safari circuit. This circuit includes the Serengeti, Lake Manyara, Tarangire, and Arusha national parks, as well as the Ngorongoro conservation area. The northern circuit is popular because, compared to its southern counterpart, it is more accessible and offers a wider variety of lodges and other accommodation facilities.
The parks and reserves in the southern safari circuit include Ruaha, Mikumi, and Katavi national parks, and the Selous game reserve. Though not as easily accessible as the northern parks, these game reserves offer a true wilderness safari experience. There are a few exclusive lodges in these parks, and going on safari here may cost you a little more than in the North, but the experience is worth every coin.
