Popularly known as the land of a thousand hills, Rwanda is one of Africa's best kept travel secrets. The country is blessed with an incredibly beautiful landscape, ranging from majestic mountain peaks, thick evergreen rainforests, to the magnificent inland beaches of Lake Kivu. It is also home to a wide array of bird species and wildlife, most notably the gigantic but endangered mountain gorillas.
Rwanda is a great destination for scenic tours, adventure travel, and gorilla trekking safaris (its star attraction). As most travel experts would agree, it ranks alongside Uganda as one of the best places to see the mountain gorilla. These endangered giants are found in the jungle on the slopes of the Virunga volcanic mountains range, which Rwanda shares with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Beyond gorilla trekking safaris, there's plenty more of apes that you can see in Rwanda, from colobus monkeys, to the endangered golden monkeys, to some chimpanzees even.
In case you are concerned about your security, considering Rwanda's troubled past and the 1994 genocide, you can rest assured that that is all water under the bridge now. Rwanda has successfully recovered from that unfortunate past and is on track to becoming one of the best managed African economies.
